You can help the animals at PHS/SPCA by donating any of the following items.
Ready to bring your donation to the shelter? We can accept donations in our Receiving Department during shelter hours:
11 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday
11 am to 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday

For all the animals
- Blankets and towels (used or new)
- Paper towels
- Newspapers
- Clean pet carriers/crates (in good condition)
- New squirt bottles
- Used cell phones, pagers, and PDAs (for which we receive cash donations)
- Used vehicle donations (Please email dtroy@phs-spca.org to receive vehicle donation instructions, or call 650-340-7022 ext. 389. Or you can download form and fax it to 650-348-7891)
For the dogs
- New or clean collars and leashes
- Unopened packages of dog treats
- Tennis balls
- Nylabones
- Kongs (all sizes)
- Hard rubber balls
- Rope toys
- Hol-ee Roller Balls (all sizes)
For the cats
- Canned tuna
- Liquid KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer) – seasonal, late April to early November
- Fancy Feast or Friskies cat food (for tempting finicky eaters)
- Trader Joe’s Tuna for Cats
- Electric heating pads (with no automatic shut-off)
- Ping-pong balls
- Golf balls
- Plastic film canisters
- Plastic shower curtain rings
- Feather toys
- Large shoeboxes (without lids) for the cats to sleep in
*If your knitting club would like to do a project for PHS/SPCA, the cats can use small, tightly-knitted blankets that are machine washable & machine dryable. Ideal size is between 2 ’x2’ and 2’x3’.
For the rabbits
- Untreated wicker baskets (for chewing)
- Plastic baby toys: keys, rattles, and other hard plastic toys (for tossing)

*Items we cannot use:
Opened food, pillows, electric blankets, sleeping bags, carpet, small boxes, paper shreds, empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls, electronics for recycling, used ink/toner cartridges, and expired medication.
Please do not leave these items with our Receiving Department, as disposing of them incurs expense for the shelter.
These are one-time needs:
- Leashes for our Behavior Department (preferably sturdy nylon)
- Digital cameras for animal cruelty investigations (used are fine, as long as they run on AA batteries and are at least 3-4 megapixels)
- One digital camera for our Continuing Care Program
- One treadmill for exercising our shelter dogs
- 4-6 large pieces of fabric for our Behavior Department (at least 45”x73” with finished edges on the long sides)
- One color laser printer for our Outreach Department
- One color laser printer for our Volunteer/Retail Services Department
