Hurricane Katrina: An Unforgettable Experience

In the late fall and early winter of 2005, PHS/SPCA was involved in an unforgettable experience, when we temporarily cared for a number of animals (dogs, mostly) displaced as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Some photos of the rescue effort and animals PHS/SPCA is housing are available here.

Due to Herculean efforts of the part of staff and volunteers, we were able to find many of the original owners and were directly involved in reuniting animals with their families. PHS/SPCA remains touched, today, by the people we met in this ordeal: the pets' owners, of course, but also the overwhelming number of local residents who helped us in one way or another, from fostering animals to donating supplies or money.

The experience allowed us to see the very best in human nature and, equally important, gave us a real-life indication of our shelter's and our community's ability to deal with disasters involving animals.

While we are no longer seeking community support for these displaced animals, we ask that local residents continue to or consider supporting the many animals we care for everyday, year-round. In peak times, that number reaches 1,000. At our slowest times, it's still well over 600. We are always in need blankets, towels and people willing to volunteer . Donations -- and not government funding -- allow us to treat the most needy animals...those with medical or behavioral conditions.

And, while we no longer need foster families for the Hurricane Katrina pets, we are always in need of foster families for animals we see year-round: young kittens with underdeveloped immune systems who cannot survive in a shelter environment and dogs who need one-on-one assistance overcoming moderate behavioral issues before they can be placed up for general adoption. If interested in becoming a foster parent, please call 340-7022, ext.393. To learn more about the many ways in which you can donate to help animals, please call 340-7022, ext. 389.
