Pet Sitting

Monday, December 20, 2010
If your holiday season includes a weekend get-away, boy am I jealous! Our lives got much more exciting and complicated with the arrival of baby Aidan Christopher 11 weeks ago.  With big sister Audrey smack in the middle of the terrible twos, and Murray, the dog, a relaxing trip to the Wine County, Carmel or Tahoe isn’t happening.  These days, a foot rub while watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta from our sofa has become our way of unwinding.  Given all the Giants baseball I watched in October and early November, it’s the least I can do for my better half! Still, we may find a way to sneak off for a few day trips between now and New Year’s. If you’re planning something more elaborate and have decided not to take your pet, you may be weighing boarding options vs. pet sitters.  If you go with the pet sitter, you can have your pet stay with him or her or have the sitter stay in your home where your pet may be more comfortable. If the pet sitter is staying in your home, this may be enough compensation; some of your younger friends who share living quarters  with three or four housemates may see this as a treat and not even ask to be paid. Then again, you may not want someone in your home and prefer paying someone to take your pet into their home. A gift card is a nice gesture, even for the friend who offers this favor free of charge. In any event, you’ll want to create a one-page care sheet for the sitter. Include your pet’s feeding times, bathroom schedule and exercise routine. List the treats he can have and things that set him off (doorbells…meeting new dogs on leash), and provide contact information for yourself, his vet, the local vet emergency clinic and local shelter which accepts strays.
